Fix for Blank screen with cursor:So many people are having the same problem of the Blank Screen after Logon, so I will Post the Fixes here.The most likely cause is a damaged or altered registry entry.Once you select the User name and enter the Password, the screen should be going blank. Try pressing “ Ctrl + Alt + Del” keys to open a Full Menu of other tasks and select the “ Task Manager” toward the bottom of the list or press “ Ctrl + Shift + Esc” keys to open the “ Task Manager” directly. In the Task Manager window, go to the “Menu” at the top left & click on “ File” go to “ New Task” (Click to Run). Type Explorer.exe in the box and click on OK. You should be able to & will get the with the icons, taskbar, start menu etc.Now, you need to open a New Task again but type Regedit, & the registry will open in a new window. Maximize the window to fill your desktop for ease of finding the following string by double-clicking the folders:HKEYLOCALMACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon Click on this key string one folder at a time until you get to Winlogon, then locate the “shell” string in the right pane. Double click it & replace the contents with just: ”explorer.exe” (Note: Do not use the quotes!) Click “OK”, then close the registry editor window and reboot your computer to see if Windows will start correctly after Logon.If you are not confident with working within the Registry, then get a computer tech to help you, or ask for help here, but you will do just fine, if you follow these directions carefully.

It would be a good idea to print this out to follow as you do the steps.Freebro.However, if you cannot get to the Logon Screen, you must use the Vista DVD to accomplish a Repair option.Inset the Vista DVD into the CD ROM & reboot. When the computer starts, it will ask you to press any key to Boot to CD (DVD), so press a key to boot to the CD.The DVD will install all the drivers to get ready to install Vista, & it will have a screen come up that asks you what do you wish to do (in so many words). There will be a Repair Option, so choose it to start repair. From this option, you can choose to restore to an earlier date, but you will lose all programs that you installed after the date you choose to go back to. However, this may be your best choice to get the Desktop back.

When you reboot, the computer should Logon to the desktop, but, if it does not, use the steps above to fix the Blank Screen.Suggestion:This seems to be a common issue with Vista after installing certain updates, so I removed all updates that I could & will not download any more updates until SP2 (if there is a SP2 later).This will help everyone to find the Solution in 1 spot to fix their computers.
